Design::Jimmie Martin

Swedish furniture design duo, Jimmie Martin, are out to make an aesthetic movement in the design world with their innovative pieces.
Products ranging from the LADY chair, which is “made out of dark wood finished with antique gold enamel paint. The seat is upholstered with artist canvas, featuring a copy of the famous "Lady with an ermine" motive, hand painted with acrylic.” to IMPERFECTION 2(shown above) “a cabinet that features lyrics of "Rachel Fuller". Finished in a high gloss varnish. This Specific piece has a high gloss pink interior.”
oodles of fun.
From the site::
"July 2004 marked the registration of Jimmie Martin Ltd.
Jimmie Martin Provides an eclectic showcase of one-off pieces of furniture combining the decadent and quirky with the nostalgic and urban.
All pieces are individually finished off to either the customer’s personal taste, or to the ideas of the founders, Jimmie and Martin. Between them, they have experience and education in the arts, design, media and fashion as well as the business and IT market.
While Jimmie is still in the fashion business, via ICM Models, they are now both focusing their talents on their new bespoke furniture concept.
There is a rare consistency of sophisticated pieces combined with a sexy, modern design element."

Spot:CKin2u

Director Laurent Briet of RSA Films, Little Minx has created a new ad for Calvin Klein fragance CKin2u. The spot features hunky actor, Kevin Zegers, (2005's "Transamerica") chasing ultra-thin model Freja Beha Erichsen, up and through a Soho lofty like warehouse covered in white tarp.
The duo finally embraces and works their way into a strategically placed antique bathtub. This kind of stuff only works in advertising!

Books::Mario Testino "Let Me In!"

TASCHEN [books] releases newest edition for Mario Testino, the noted fashion/everything photographer and celebutant magnet.
The book’s cover features Demi Moore applying red lipstick to a (still) baby faced Ashton Kutcher. This is only a peak at the tons of goodies that are inside.
"As one of the 21st century’s most travelled, acclaimed, and influential fashion photographers, Mario Testino has unsurpassed access to the most magnetic stars of popular culture. For some time now he has been collecting a personal archive of off-screen moments, often snatched spontaneously before, during, and after more official sittings for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Testino’s many clients in the world of fashion. The result is a portrait not just of a generation of the most wanted and talked-about, but an invitation to be part of the backstage parties and unstaged moments of Testino’s life. Sometimes offbeat, but always on the pulse, Let me in!, with Testino’s eye for a modern kind of elegance liberated from conventional polish, is a new chapter from the photographer who has already made his mark with the books Any Objections, Front Row Backstage, Alive, Portraits, Kids, Diana Princess of Wales, and numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide."

Happy Birthday Helvetica!

I remember when I first used Helvetica. It was for a science project on dreams and R.E.M. (a stage of sleep, not the band folks).
I used the font as Neue Ultra Light at a font size of 13. Thankfully, the project was success (thanks to my big sister!) and I’ve been an avid user of the font ever since.
"2007 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Max Miedinger and Edouard Hoffmann’s design Helvetica, the most ubiquitous of all typefaces. Widely considered the official typeface of the twentieth century, Helvetica communicates with simple, well-proportioned letterforms that convey an aesthetic clarity that is at once universal, neutral, and undeniably modern."

Inked in Jade

Jade Jagger is undoubtedly a fashion icon in her own right. Now, tattoo artist? That is questionable. But whether you like it or not, this is another career she may delve into…or at least ponder as long as it’s in style.

Color Me Indecisive....
I can't for the life of me, stick with a blog color. Red...? too strong? God knows.
Hanna Liden::Subtle Beauty

What is it about Hanna Lidens work that makes it so unique? We see dark, disturbing work all the time. But it’s Lidens haunting unfamiliarity that makes it stand out. You want to look closer but that doesn’t necessarily make the picture clearer-- it is literally distant.
Although to totally contradict myself, if I had to compare it to something, it would have to be a totally different medium, i.e. paintings by MIGUEL CALDERON, which you may know from the film The Royal Tenenbaums. Her work captures that same oddity as his photo “Bad Route”, in which young men with masks on bikes growl at the supposed camera.
But it is her untitled photo (shown above) that in my opinion really enthralls the viewer. In it, a woman sits casually upon a rock as death walks behind her. She is accepting of her fate and seems calm as she transforms into a cadaver like being.It would be great to know the real meaning behind this photo, or if this idea just amused Liden but didn’t necessarily have an intention. If anyone would happen to know, please share.

My Habit!

Home design company “Habitat” has issued their much-anticipated ’07 Mini Catalogue via Internet.
What you’ll see: Fresh summer homes with monochromatic tones offset by deep shades of oak wood. Features furniture pieces like the Rattan chair hammock, which is a furniture tool selected from a species of six hundred tree palms, established by the tribe of Calameae.
The art direction is unbearably beautiful for it’s simplicity. It’s a fresh breath from all the Ikea clutter; we’re sometimes influenced into thinking as “fashionable” & “Trendy”. However, unlike Ikea, Habitat is not for those on a budget. Items range from €45 to €849. Yes, those are Euros. Unfortunately, items are only shipped throughout the UK & Europe only. Bullocks!

Serge Gainsbourg 'Lemon Incest' indeed.
I think Charlotte Gainsbourg is absolutely adorable and I was absolutely surprised to see this video. I did not know that she had such a "close" relationship with her father Serge Gainsbourg. I don't think that they may have had any "relations" but by the looks of the video, I can definitely see why it stirred so much speculation and controversy.
Peter Bjorn & John 'Let's Call It Off' but don't...
You may or may not know, but I'm kind'a anti-youtube. The main reason being the quality.
However, this song/band is just waaaaay too good to pass up.
Here is my new fave band, Peter Bjorn & John with 'Let's Call it Off'...so good.

Disclaimer: Don't watch this video if you are easily offended.
When I first saw Pleix 'Birds' video at ResFest for French band Vitalic, I was blown away. They have this unique style of humor that makes their work beautiful--especially in terms of lighting.
Here is just another example of the Pleix greatness.

Why The Post(s) Are Scarce...
Call it a sabbatical if you must but in reality I'm sorting through the archives of my life to find meaning. Psych.
No, really, I'm working on some applications that has me in sort of a cerebral melt down. As soon as it subsides, i'll be posting regularly.
Thank you. Please check back frequently and coherently.

Accomodations::Sleeping With The Artist

Gladstone hotel has taken rest and relaxation to more of an artistic side. The entire second floor of the building was used for an exhibition, but the third and fourth floors are a full-fledged hotel with a unique story all to itself. The hotel is a newly renovated Victorian building, 115 years old.
It now has 37 artist-designed hotel rooms and suites that range in style from classical contemporary to the outer reaches of the avant-garde. Christina Zeidler, one of two curators, is also the hotel's manager. All of the decorative elements, and much of the furniture and the lighting were custom created for each room.
If you can't afford to stay here, then at least you can get a little inspiration for your own bedroom setting.

MV::Lady Sovereign "Those Were The Days"
"Lady Sovereign’s new video for Those Were The Days presented Family with a challenge: Sov wanted to do something that showcased her more fashion conscious look and also illustrate the narrative while the directors were focused on getting a more mature performance from their leading lady. Setting the video in a photo booth gave us that confessional angle and also kept the whole thing tight. Doesn’t it look great?"

It took me a couple views to actually get into the groove of this, at first glance, cheesy video. But the more you watch and listen, the more you realize you can’t get enough of the upbeat tempo that is Everything But The Girl. Remember Tracey Thorn sitting in the back of a cab in the 90’s talking about how “the desserts miss the rain”? Yes, well, she’s back whether you like it or not.
So the concept is a pea size Tracey Thorn lost in a world of office drones that bust synchronized dance moves. And all together, the song & dance is fun and a little bit of a guilty pleasure.
The video is directed by Si & Ad over at Academy Films.

MV::Grizzly Bear "Knife"

Production Company Ghost Robot’s directing collective Encyclopedia Pictura directs this unique video for quirky Brooklyn based indie band, Grizzly Bear.
The video is for their song “Knife” off of their Yellow House album. The video features a blend of images somewhat reminiscent of 70’s style sci-fi flick. Think Planet of The Apes meets Barbarella. The lead character sports a Klingon-style forehead piece and is “toyed” with by mud made monster, all while the rest of the band sinks into quicksand!

AIR:Pocket Symphony

AIR definitely has to be one of my favorite bands of all time. Why? Because their songs have an intense serenity, leaving every listener thinking “How and why do I feel this way when I listen to them?” Maybe the feeling is a desire to live inside their music.
For me: I’ve always sort of pictured floating along their sound waves, which in my mind would be neon colored, sitting atop staring into a cosmic distance. I wouldn’t know where I was going, nor would I have a desire to look back. I would be completely content in my state.
Okay! Snap back to reality please.
AIR has finally released their much-anticipated album, Pocket Symphony. It’s available and brilliant. And…it’s AIR.

Nagi Noda (Partizan) directs Scissor Sisters' "She's My Man"

Nagi Noda has surely created a distinct style for herself with this new video for Scissor Sisters.
It’s comical the way you purposely see people dressed in black who are meant to carry props around as though they’re being thrown! Kind of reminds me of a low-budget martial arts film made in the 80’s, no?

Article::New York Magazine Features Arcade Fire!

"Arcade Fire opened for U2, performed with David Bowie and David Byrne, and were proclaimed, by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, 'the greatest band in the history of music'..."
Unfortunately, the last show Arcade Fire played was overly under estimated with ticket sales-leaving devoted fans, well, ticket less!
However, with their highly anticipated album, Neon Bible, it’ll be sure to keep their loyal fans loving them more than ever.
New York Magazine just released a brief article in their March issue as well as a shorter version on their website.
