FILM::2 DAYS IN PARIS, Directed by Julie Delpy

2 DAYS IN PARIS is the directorial debut for Julie Delpy.
Delpy, best known for her film Before Sunset alongside Ethan Hawke, has proven that she’s more than just a charming French actress with an adorable Parisian accent. It’s in 2 DAYS IN PARIS where she shines and reveals her talent for writing quick-witted dialogue as well as proving her remarkable talent for directing.

The film opens up with a shot of Marion (Delpy) and Jack (played by Adam Goldberg) sleeping in a train car on their way to visit Marion’s parents in Paris. With a voiceover by Delpy, this first scene gives you insight to a relationship that signifies what it’s like to be a couple in the 21st century. She describes the basics of their relationship and how long they’ve been together, but it is throughout the film that you feel the genuine familiarity of a sometimes tumultuous but overall loving relationship.
Jack (Goldberg) is a neurotic interior designer with heavy insecurities about his relationship with Marion. Marion (Delpy) is a crisis conscious photographer who is slowly losing her vision (although it is not the films concentration). Together, they go on a two-day adventure into Marion’s past, where they run into her old lovers and friends that convince Jack to question how well him and Marion really know each other.

Both performances are touching and hilarious--you will literally laugh out loud! With a similarity to a Woody Allen & Diane Keaton relationship, they evoke realness and quirkiness that makes their connection so distinct.
It’s in 2 DAYS IN PARIS that a woman is finally portrayed as not being a girlfriend-of-boy, but instead the man takes on the role boyfriend-of-girl, in which she is the leading character due to her unromantic sensibility and independent attitude; a woman who is not typically devoted to a relationship but instead realistically frightened by the commitment. It’s refreshing outlook. I’m looking forward to what Delpy has in store for us next!

ART::THERESA DUNCAN & JEREMY BLAKE

Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan, in 1997.

“Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake were talented young artists who were deeply in love. Their bizarre suicides have captivated the art world: Was it their brilliant imaginations that did them in?”

Like a plot out of a movie, it is a tragic story about the unexpected deaths of two beloved contributors to the world of art and culture. Jeremy Blake, whom some described as a visual video artist, and his writer/aspiring filmmaker girlfriend Theresa Duncan.
Together they created a world of conspiracy and lunacy, overwhelmed with desires to find an answer to their constant insecurities.
They possessed an unwavering love for each other and were always quick to defend one another’s honor. It was Theresa and Jeremy against their friends, against Hollywood, against scientologist; it was Theresa and Jeremy…against the world.
Ultimately, their paranoia was taken to extremes when Theresa took her life on July 10, swallowing a number of Tylenol PM tablets with bourbon. The following week, Jeremy took his own life, by drowning himself in the ocean off New York’s Rockaway Beach.

No one knows the exact reason why either of them could’ve made such rash decisions to end their lives, but it is no question that they will be greatly missed.
Where did it all begin? Back in ’94, when the couple first met at a Fugazi concert. Then in 1995, one autumn night they ran into each other again. It was backstage at the old Knitting Factory, and this time the attraction was immediate. From that point on, they were inseparable. They shared ideas, interests, and frequent visions that left them segregated from a world outside.
NY Mag has recently published an article on this tragic story that is honest but only a mere peak into the lives of two brilliant and lost souls.

It’s sinister and provocative and sometimes downright inappropriate. Is it a formula for tasteless photography? Not in Xim Izquierdo’s case. In fact, it’s what gives his imagery its distinctive look, aside from his usage of cool tones, which accentuate his ghostly photos.

July 12 - August 10, 2007
Opens Thursday, July 12, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

"Foxy Production presents Solar Set, a group exhibition featuring works by Michael Bell-Smith, Olga Chernysheva, Tony Labat, Takeshi Murata, and Siebren Versteeg. Solar Set refers to a box work by Joseph Cornell from 1958, where the artist collected and arranged solar statistics, spherical objects, and images of the sun, among other elements, to create an idiosyncratic universe in miniature. The exhibition explores the ways in which images, objects or events are collected and reconfigured within conceptually rich and critically resonant visual systems. Using diverse means, the works take popular cultural forms as their starting point to forge imaginative connections, evocative images, and unexpected metaphors."

LISTEN::Bat for Lashes

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I have finally been pulled from the dark depths of a music slump! It happened one night, not too long ago, when I was searching through the archives of Colonel Blimp’s website. Clicking on Dougal Wilson’s video reel, I came across a new video he directed for Bat for Lashes (Vid::Platform)for a track called “What’s a Girl To Do?” a drum infused song with a similar sound to The Ronettes hit “Be My Baby” (better known as that song from the opening credits in Dirty Dancing).
It was love at first sound! Maybe it was the nostalgia that pulled me in, but it was the band’s lead vocalist Natasha Kahn’s melodic voice that made me stay. And after dl’ing their debut album Fur and Gold, this so-called “love” was reaffirmed.
Their opening track ‘Horse and I’ came to lead vocalist Natasha Khan in a dream. It was “Inspired by tales of Joan of Arc. Natasha is woken by a black horse at the window and sent on a fateful quest. This extraordinary dream became the muse for the songs that now comprise Fur and Gold.”
Amongst her fancy fan base is Nellee Hooper, Brett Anderson, and Bjork, who was said to be seen in a sold out crowd. B4L (my new nickname for them) wide ranges of instruments include marching band drums, desert guitar, ballet school piano, harpsichord, sub-bass snarls, handclaps and naive beats.
If it is not their sound that draws you in, then maybe it’ll be Natasha Kahn’s individual style or ski slope nose that’ll keep your attention. Regardless, it’s more than worth a listen.
