MV::CAM ARCHER DIRECTS SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE "GOODNIGHT"

This new video for Six Organs Of Admittance is simplistically beautiful. Directed by Cam Archer, it urges a viewer to sit still and take in what you’re seeing. The tranquil tune is a perfect fit for the images onscreen.

ART::LILLY MCELROY "I THROW MYSELF AT MEN"

Photobucket
Lilly McElroy is a performance artist currently working on an ongoing series called I throw myself at men,in which she lunges at strangers in bars in hopes of them catching her. The acts are documented as men brace themselves for the flying artist’s impact as McElroy leaps forward and falls into the arms of innocent bystanders.
Photobucket
“The work she produces is a cross between physical comedy and earnest confessional. She throws her whole body into it and often leads with her chest.” The subject is “examining how easily we make connections and how much can be at stake if we don’t”. Now that’s a way to pick someone up!

We’ve all been the person who scrounges for loose change just to splurge on Eggs Benedict for a ritual Sunday brunch with friends, or maybe for that Dior mascara you’re so accustom to using because you really think it makes that much of difference. Or maybe you’re the girl or guy who won’t let Duane Reade hair product get within 5 ft of your intentionally messy tresses, because you swear by Aveda’s organic made products. Yep. We’ve all been “that person”, who really can’t afford it but would do anything not to give up their pricey lifestyle, even if it means eating street meat for lunch.
NYTimes has an insightful article about the lives of twentysomething’s struggling to survive in a city where competition is fierce and the rent is high.

TO DO::MCCARREN PARK POOL PARTIES!

Photobucket
We don’t have to say farewell to McCarren Park pool parties just yet! The three months of fun in the sun, live performances, beer guzzling, and slip n’ slide fun, will commence June 6th, with a super M.I.A performance kick-off.
Photobucket
If you were lucky enough to snag a ticket for the already sold out show, go you. As for others less fortunate, stop your whining. The event calendar is filled with plentiful of performances and stuff to do, including my personal fave, Summer Screen, in which a massive projector plays cult classics and classics alike.
This summer, films will include: Wet Hot American Summer, Rushmore, and The Virgin Suicides.

Welcome, summer!

MV::JON LEONE DIRECTS WHITE WILLIAMS "VIOLATOR"

This is a great new video from musical newcomer White Williams. It's refreshing to see new techniques used other than stop motion, thanks to director Jon Leone.
Leone ornaments "Violator" with oil, water, foil, and what looks like glitter. And I assume it helps that singer White Williams is sort of, no definitely, a looker.

Kudos.

This summer, Danish/Icelandic artist, Olafur Eliasson, will install various waterfalls throughout the city, including New York's East River. The artist, who is currently exhibiting at P.S.1, plans on creating these site-specific installations, which will be funded by Public Art Fund. These freestanding falls will be as high as 60-70 ft, as tall as the Brooklyn Bridge.
Hopefully we'll be able to catch some of that refreshing mist during a hot New York summer day!

MV::ARIEL PINK "GRAY SUNSET" DIRECTED BY TRAVIS PETERSON

I devoured Ariel Pinks extreme experimentalism, back in the day when musician Dino Felipe of Schematic Records introduced me to him. It was then, that I was jolted into this bizarre sort of dream-like appreciation for this unique artist. He’s a bit glam rock, but at the same time, not definable. He purposely sounds distant and faded, like listening to an old 8 track or record. He’s androgynous and oddly sexy. This music video is very recent, but the track is off Pink’s The Doldrums album, which released in 2004. The video is directed by Travis Peterson. Also, I think he's hypnotizing me. I keep watching this video over & over again!

FILM/DVD::THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE

Photobucket

Benten Films releases director Todd Rohal prized film The Guatemalan Handshake . The untraditional narrative film won Special Jury Prizes at Slamdance and Torino. The film centers around a power outage in small-town America and the effects it has on its somewhat disturbed, yet charmingly quirky residents. Despite it's title, the film really has no relation to Guatemala.

MUSIC::EL PERRO DEL MAR & LYKKE LI, BOWERY BALLROOM

Photobucket

Last night’s El Perro Del Mar/Lykke Li concert exceeded all expectations. Lykke Li was vivacious and full of non-stop energy that kept the crowd enthralled with the petite artist, who jumped around tirelessly while singing and occasionally slamming a snare with her electric hand. While headliner El Perro Del Mar quietly came on stage afterwards. So quietly, that the talking crowd didn’t even notice she was there until she opened up with “party”, only to be followed by “Dog” and other songs which were later on accompanied by the rest of her band.
Photobucket
The emergence of a firecracker like Li and a subtle and obviously shy Sarah Assbring (El Perro Del Mar) was the perfect mix to keep you amped through out the show. And if you were there early enough, you didn’t miss the performance by up-and-coming songstress Anna Ternheim, who was just as quirky as her fellow vocalists, and will surely headline a show in the future.
Photobucket
Ending the night, Lykke Li popped back onstage and joined El Perro Del Mar for a rendition of Wendy Rene’s oldie “After Laughter (Comes Tears)”. The delightful duet ended the night gleefully, as one crowd member put it “the teacher and the rebel student finally come together in the end”.

Greencard Pictures director Ron Winter, collaborates with New Orleans funk band Galactic.
