Best Bagels in Miami

Photobucket

As a former Miami resident with a partial New York City upbringing, there were many times while living in the cosmopolitan city that I longed for a NYC style bagel. The doughiness, the indigestible deliciousness, and the oodles of cream cheese to spread over it. So to my Miami friends, if you share any of my former sentiments, this one is for you. A list of best bagel places in Miami, courtesy of Blackbook.

Shop // Grey Gardens

Photobucket

Grey Gardens is the true story of a mother and daughter who escape to the confines of their East Hampton home in isolation from the world outside. The mother-daughter duo, better known as Big and Little Edie, got a chance at fame when documentarian Albert Maysles used them as his main subjects in his film. Now available at Anthropologie, you can have the book version containing illustrations, photographs, film stills, production notes, and transcripts.

Tom Ford Directs "A Single Man"

Photobucket

A Single Man is fashion designer Tom Ford's directorial debut. And the viewer can see, just by the trailer alone, the former Gucci designer's keen sense of style shines through visually and cinematically. The film is an erotic portrayal of a gay English professor who loses his partner, and his life after, all the while wearing Ford's perfectly tailored suits.

Martin Margiela's design for the Suite Ile aux Oiseaux at Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux, comes not long after his furniture design collection, White Objects. There's been debate over whether or not the decade is actually over since some say we're coming to a full decade and not ending it. Song of the Moment // Julian Casablancas "11th Dimension"

Photobucket

Julian Casablancas, better known as former lead singer of The Strokes, has released his first solo album, 'Phrazes for the Young'. Like most musicians starting out their solo career, you can hear Casablancas desperately trying distinguish himself from the likeness of The Strokes. He almost successfully does so with just a few hints of the monotone belting that made his famous in the first place, with an all in all decent compilation of poppy, rock tracks. Enjoy!

The Selby // Dan Martensen and Shannan Click

As you may have recognized, I'm an avid reader of The Selby, curated by artist Todd Selby. In this recent slideshow, The Selby captures the interiors of photographer Dan Martensen and artist Shannan Click in their new country home. The home has a barn that works as a studio, another barn for guests to sleep that is also a dining and entertaining area, along with their main house. The design is an eclectic mix of Americana and old country with wooden molding to accent this cozy theme.

More than just a bookcase filler, this six-volume set includes 2,000 works of art from Van Gogh, which the artist refers to in his letters, hence the name. The work inside is intimate and illuminating, detailing the work of one of the greatest artists in history.

The only thing missing from this treasure trove of iconic work is a Van Gogh ear charm necklace. Now that might just throw me over the edge in my purchase decision.

Books // Taschen // Art Cinema

Photobucket
Photobucket

Cinema as an art medium can include a wide range of subjects; with that, it also comes with many critics. Often the question: what makes an effective video work? How does it translate to a viewer? Art for the sake of art? Taschen's release of Art Cinema manages to articulate this conversation and extend it to further thought. And despite the inevitable criticism, one can agree that the work is nothing less than striking.

"Debate over cinema’s credibility as an art form is as old as the medium itself, and largely defined in terms of formal, psychological, ideological, social, or auteurist theories. To explore how artists are also using the medium to investigate a wider range of aesthetic issues that are generally related to modern and contemporary art practices, this book is broken down into 10 subgenres, including abstraction, collage, appropriation, post-surrealism, structuralism, duration, parody, and expanded cinema."

Broken Embraces, Directed by Pedro Almodóvar

Photobucket

Genius does it again.

"A man writes, lives and loves in darkness. Fourteen years before, he was in a brutal car crash on the island of Lanzarote. In the accident, he not only lost his sight, he also lost Lena, the love of his life. This man uses two names: Harry Caine, a playful pseudonym with which he signs his literary works, stories and scripts, and Mateo Blanco, his real name, with which he lives and signs the film he directs. After the accident, Mateo Blanco reduces himself to his pseudonym, Harry Caine. If he can’t direct films he can only survive with the idea that Mateo Blanco died on Lanzarote with his beloved Lena."

Homage to Grace

VOGUE Creative Director, Grace Coddington is undeniably the glue that holds the magazine together. We finally saw The September Issue, and became totally smitten with Coddington. She is the nice dad to Anna Wintour's mean mommy act. And probably one of the only people willing to step up to the icy editrix. Not to mention, she's totally brilliant.

Vogue // Michelle Williams

Photobucket

A cropped Mia Farrow'esque haircut - ala Rosemary's Baby - accentuates Michelle William's pixie-like features. Her daily style is a mix of understated cool Brooks Brothers button downs and relaxed fit cut-offs, yet she still has an ability to look enviably classic when wearing designer clothing to award shows and premieres. Williams is the newest cover girl for Vogue, and Sally Singer visits the actress and single mother at her upstate New York home (her other home is in Brooklyn), and gets a few words with the complex starlet who defines the meaning of a strong single parent trying to get through it all.

Delusional Downtown Divas

Photobucket

Delusional Downtown Divas are webisodes we found out about not too long ago through the grape vine, and now, we just can't get enough. Currently streaming on Index Magazine online, the show's creators, Lena Dunham, Joana D'Avillez, and Isabel Halley have a knack for dry humor and wit. It's Absolutely Fabulous meets Party Girl.

"Delusional Downtown Divas chronicles the adventures of Oona, Swann, and AgNess, three young women hungry for art-world stardom but comically unaware of how to reach their goal of stylish domination. The DDD's are downtown natives, living in AgNess' father's Tribeca loft. They spend their days smoking pot, changing outfits every few minutes, and plotting about out how to worm their way back into the art world they were raised in-- but now they're adult women with professional aspirations, not just kids stealing pretzels from Leo Castelli's gallery kitchen."

Going Gaga For Preen

New York Fall Fashion Week is upon us, and we cannot contain ourselves, because despite economic woes, designers are turning it out full force giving us hope for a more fruitful future. Preen, which showed today, displayed an eclectic mix of duds infused with colors (like that pink number we're eyeing) but also toned it down with sophisticated black trousers and monochromatic tops. We loves.

The Ace Hotel, New York

I was delightfully introduced to the bar at The Ace Hotel this week, which is chicly stylized with deep-cushioned leather couches, dim lighting, and prohibition influenced decor. Although I didn't have the pleasure of escaping to the plush interiors of the hotel rooms, from the slideshow above, I can tell that I'd fall equally as hard for the impeccable furnishing and design.
