FASHION/MEN::TIMBERLAND, IS THAT YOU?

Now this is quite the departure from The Timberland Boot Company's usual ghetto-thug'ish style bootwear. But it seems like they're catching on to the newest trend of vintage workman boots and their popularity amongst the male fashionista community.

SONG OF THE WEEK::DEPARTMENT OF EAGLES "NO ONE DOES IT LIKE YOU"

Photobucket

This week, let's enjoy Daniel Rossen's (of Grizzly Bear) newest venture, Department of Eagles. In actuality, it's really not his newest venture because he's been writing for DOE since his college years at NYU with former roommate Fred Nicolaus. Like Grizzly Bear, Rossen and his bandmate flex the same melodic harmonizing whilst paying homage to an older sounding era.

This track "No One Does It Like You" is off their newest album, In Ear Park.

Enjoy!

In the new issue of Interview, writer Armistead Maupin gets a few words with Milk director, Gus Van Sant. He talks about what lead him to the making of the film, starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, that chronicles the story of the first openly gay person to be elected to a public office in the United States, when he took his post on the San Francisco board of city supervisors in January 1977.

SONG OF THE WEEK::GLASSER "APPLY"

Photobucket

Platform's Song of the Week is finally back up and running! (view in upper-right corner).

West Coast artist, Glasser, is a fuse of melodic vocals that sing in a chant-like tone, occasionally hiccuping to emphasize the beats. Don't deny the urge to close your eyes and sway from side to side...I didn't.

.........................................................

Photobucket
Between ’07 and ’08, I practically stumbled over the most overused term heard around New York: Gentrification (particularly as I am a Brooklyn resident). Now, in the throws of a recession, I predict “because of the economy” will be the term of ’09. Not in a depressing way, of course - but rather in a conscious consumer-saving way. Because of the economy we can’t afford all the luxurious accoutrements some of us were so conditioned to buying at our disposal: travel, designer accessories, anything plausible within our lifestyle. But before we throw in the towel, I have listed Platform must-haves for the holiday, putting the economic downturn on the backburner, even if it’s just for the rest of ’08.

Enjoy!

ART/MUSIC::SPECIAL SCREENING OF EARLY MUSIC VIDEOS BY DAVID BOWIE AT MOMA

Photobucket

David Bowie is nothing short of an innovator and icon. His videos in the early 80s gained him recognition as an experimentalist with a keen sense for self-expression. Frequently collaborating with photographer and filmmaker Mick Rock, (best known for his photos of 70s glam and punk icons Iggy Pop, Queen, the Ramones, and Lou Reed), he influenced a culture both musically and visually.

Moma (Museum of Modern Art)) will host a special screening of Bowie's early videos tomorrow night that showcase his colorful videos that will surely leave you wanting more.

MUSIC::KARIN DREIJER ANDERSSON (OF THE KNIFE) TALKS ABOUT HER SOLO PROJECT, FEVER RAY

Photobucket

As a devoted listener of The Knife, I was ecstatic to learn that lead vocalist Karin Dreijer was planning her debut as a solo artist. Fever Ray is all her own and she gave listeners a sneak peek earlier last month with a sound-byte from her single "If I Had a Heart". Interview Magazine got a few words from the enigmatic artist, who says the name Fever Ray came from holding out her hand and touching the sound waves of what she had done and it felt like a Fever Ray—a beam of fever...

Time Person of the Year 2008 is none other than President-elect Barack Obama. The candid pictures accompanying the article were taken while he was attending Occidental College in 1980, when a budding photographer by the name of Lisa Jack asked Obama if she could take some black and white photos of him, to which he obligingly replied yes.

Sometimes in life, you just need to look at a beautiful photo in order to realize how many wonderful things there are in the world to appreciate. Photographer Pierre Debusschere's photos evoke the kind of feeling of being present when you're not. It's the way the air looks, crisp and clammy at the same time. His work moves from personal photography to the more mainstream world of fashion. A talent, no doubt, Debusschere's photos ignite a feeling of tranquility and familiarity.

MV/DIRECTOR LOOKOUT::JON LEONE

For a director like Jon Leone, it’s surprising to learn that he once worked for Playboy. “I shot and edited video. Trust me, I did not seek that out. A family friend is the Editor-in-Chief and I was bribed. Well, not exactly…but anyway...I was young!”. Leone doesn’t dwell too much on that experience though. Instead, he’s steadily moving forward working with bands like Animal Collective, White Williams, and Ariel Pink.

He recently posted his reel on his JON LEONE website, where music videos for aforementioned bands are featured as well as videos for Beach House, Dungen, Priestbird, a promo for Pitchfork.com, and a party projection excerpt for The New Yorker. His style is completely independent from current directors whose work revolves around campy and 80s style references. But instead, Leone transcends the literalness of vocals and instead creates moody imagery that is all his own.

Currently unsigned, Leone is working on video projects and shooting independently.

MUSIC::THE KNIFE COMPOSES "TOMORROW, IN A YEAR" OPERA FOR HOTEL PRO FORMA IN DENMARK

Photobucket

Musical duo, The Knife, has recently been invited to write and compose an opera for Danish performance house, Hotel Pro Forma.

The opera, titled Tomorrow, in a Year, explores English naturalist Charles Darwin’s perception of nature and time. A performance of evolution and change, of transformation and mutation. One that does not deal with Darwin but acts like Darwin. "The Swedish music group creates completely new compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera. The form is experimental and exploratory" (Hotel Pro Forma press release). The opera is set to play sometime in 2009. That just might be reason enough to take a trip to the Nordic country.
